03-RI-Pin-YouthExchange-RYE-PatchRotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a key part of our club’s International Service, and has been since Heirisson’s inception. It’s also one of our most rewarding “New Generations” youth involvements. It helps build global friendships for all our futures.

We get to know our students really well, often building longstanding family friendships across generations.

35-Youth-RYEP-Aust

“Inbound” students generally attend our weekly meetings (and go to family meals with a member each week) unless program, school or host family commitments have priority. They also often attend other club functions, as well as school and host family events.

“Outbound” students regularly update members about their experience, usually at least monthly, but often weekly, via reports, diary notes, or blogs etc.

With social media accessible across much of the globe (Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Skype etc), family, friends and club members can now share some of the experience of exchange students on an ongoing basis.

Heirisson Student Alumni

Heirisson’s “Inbound” and “Outbound” (later “Rebound”) students form our Youth Exchange alumni, part of the broader ‘family’ of Heirisson.

*       NB: Rotary year of return for Outbound and Inbound students. Northern hemisphere — calendar year, Southern — ‘fiscal’ year.

35-Youth-RYE-Aust-logoMany rebound students continue their involvement through ROTEX or are active in community activities.

We are always pleased to hear from past students, many of who meet up regularly around the world with their exchange peers, host parents and counsellors etc for holidays and family events, or for post-graduate studies or during professional/vocational research gatherings and conferences.

Spending a year in Norway amongst the fjords, snow, brown cheese and beautiful people was tough as you can imagine! My host families and councillor welcomed me with open arms, and although the language barrier proved tough at the start, particularly at school, once my Norwegian improved my time became much easier.

Being on exchange you learn to get through challenges on your own and learn that you are in control of making the most of whatever situation comes your way (even if its going out on a tugboat in the North Sea in the middle of a storm!). Norway is a home away from home for me and I look forward to returning again soon.

Kirsty Shade (Norway,
1998-1999)

Rotary Exchange changed my life in that it made me more resourceful, helped make me more confident about taking risks (ie: moving away from Perth) and helped give me a better understanding of what steps are required to get things done.

On top of this I believe it made me more outgoing, it improved my Japanese no-end and gave me a year off to refocus my energies post-high school, which was excellent.

Basically I would have a different outlook on life and I do not think I would be here now if it wasn’t for my year away in 1995 to Japan.

Christopher Rumley (Japan,
1995-1996)

RYE Outbound 2015

Rotary Youth Exchange Students Outbound in 2015 with DG Angus Buchanan and the RYE District Team

About the Program

RYE is a 12 Month exchange with families involved in Rotary Clubs in Districts overseas. Europe and South America have been the focus for most of the students we have sponsored or hosted since 1992. However we have also had students go to or visit from Asia, Africa and North America.

Our District 9455 Youth Exchange Committee has information about the program in Western Australia.
