Community Service Directorate

In Rotary, Community Service encourages and fosters the application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life in one’s local area. For us, depending on the project, that may means East Perth, the Perth CBD, our metropolitan area, our District, or our state, Western Australia, or our country, Australia! Heirisson has developed many and varied Community Service programs that draw upon the many talents and diverse experience of our members to reach a successful conclusion.

Some projects require a shovel and hard manual work as the raw material whilst other projects may require project management skills and a network of contacts to be successful. Every member’s talents can be used on all projects.

Heirisson Community Service programs, projects and relationships have included:

Replacing St Bart’s Belfry (Completed) In our early years, our club was active in assisting The National Trust (WA) with upkeep at the East Perth Cemeteries. We’re very proud of the replica of the original bell tower. And no, there is no truth to the rumour that we almost burnt the place down with a grass fire from mowing the grass. HeadQuarters Youth Facility (Completed) The HeadQuarters (HQ) project is world-class youth facility in Leederville. Heirisson was instrumental in its conception, design and development, soliciting funding and support for construction and renovation, and oversaw its early operation. Salvation Army Christmas Appeal Each Christmas Heirisson members and friend collect and donate festive food products to the Salvation Army for use in their Christmas activities and events and distribution to families in need. Read more … 
Healing Hearts Foundation (Wound up 2013-14) The Healing Hearts Foundation (HHF) was born from the 1999 Interlaken Swiss canyoning tragedy where 21 young lives were lost (including 14 Australians). It focussed on helping heal hearts broken by the loss of a child. Read more … 
Place of Reflection (Phases 1, 2 & 3) The award winning Place of Reflection (PoR) is a place of healing, hope and renewal for all who have suffered loss, set on the beautiful escarpment of Kings Park. Read more … 
Jade Lewis & Friends For some years, Heirisson members have provided specific support to Jade and her activities in drug education, with planning and governance, technology and board membership. Read more … 
Foodbank Christmas Appeal (Give a Feed) Give a Feed (and its Help Feed 1000 predecessor) helps fund festive Foodbank hampers for disadvantaged families and household around Western Australia. Heirisson members assist in packing hampers each year. Read more … 
Rotary Bowelscan WA (Catch Cancer) Each year, during Bowelscan month, the club works with local pharmacists to promote bowel health as part of an Australian Rotary Health Research Fund supported program and the National Bowel Scan initiative. Read more … 
Kimberley Dental Team (KDT) Heirisson, partnering with Perth Rotary, has a strategic relationship with the Kimberley Dental Team (KDT), led by Jan and John Owen, who lead volunteer dental personnel in remote Aboriginal communities, and now (with KDT Southern) around the fringes of Perth communities. Support for individuals or families in crisis This project involves assessing and assisting individual cases for support as they arise. The directorate hopes to do about two of these per year. Read more … 
Rotary Recycling With many other clubs, we participate in projects to recycle prescription spectacles and pharmaceuticals for use overseas, postage stamps for occupational therapy and overseas sale, titanium ring-pulls to aid development of prosthetic limbs in war-torn countries, and corks. Mobile GP (Relationship) Heirisson has developed a strategic relationship with Dr Andrew Davis of Mobile GP, who tends to the healthcare of many of Perth’s homeless population. This has seen us donate two mobile defibrillators, develop the Socks in the City campaign, and various other potential initiatives, Read more …
Anglicare WA Heirisson members are working with Anglicare, particularly through the ground-breaking Foyer project in Leederville, to identify service opportunities with young people (and families) emerging from homelessness. Read more …
